The Illusion | Diane C. Howard

My friends have all asked me

What I see in you

Truth is there's this thing

An illusion you do

You give me the illusion

Of someone who's real

An illusion that's deep

And it makes me feel

Whenever I'm with you

It rivals my dreams

Whole time you're reciting

What you saw in some meme

You give me the illusion

Of happily ever after

But if I listened closely

I'd hear sinister laughter

When morning comes and you're gone

I awake in confusion

You did it again

It was all an illusion

More about The Poem...

This poem explores the theme of deceptive appearances in a romantic relationship. The speaker reflects on their friends' curiosity about what they see in their partner, revealing that their attraction is based on an illusion. The partner projects a facade of being genuine and fulfilling the speaker's dreams, but this is merely a mirage. The partner's actions are superficial, often based on clichés or memes, lacking real substance. The poem captures the speaker's realization of the superficiality and fleeting nature of their partner's charm, leaving them in confusion each time the illusion dissipates.
